What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is an evidence based, holistic approach to health care. Our practitioners are passionate investigators of your health. We want to support you in being the healthiest version of yourself through the use of nutrition and natural medicine, all backed up by the very latest scientific research. At Nurtured Birth our Naturopaths pride themselves on keeping abreast of the very latest studies and evidence based research to best support you.

We treat the symptoms but most importantly, going beyond to uncover the underlying causes of any health issues. Our Naturopaths take a complex look at your lifestyle and diet along with other systems involved and symptoms experienced, including gut health, nervous system, fertility, inflammation and mood. By navigating this closely with you, an achievable wellbeing treatment plan is developed. This may include supplements, herbs and dietary recommendations.

At Nurtured Birth we pride ourselves on working in collaboration with other health care professionals and specialists. This may include your medical doctors, IVF specialist, dermatologist, gastroenterologist and oncologist. Pathology and functional testing results are analysed and referred to as needed in formulation of your treatment plan.

Making Babies

Nurtured Birth specialises in supporting families at this very special time to help you make the healthiest babies possible.

Whilst good health is essential throughout one’s pregnancy for optimal foetal growth and development, it is extremely important that we consider the time before conception.

There are numerous studies highlighting that the critical window of opportunity to influence the health of your eggs and your babies future is 100 days prior to conception.  Nutritional deficiencies, toxin exposure, diet and lifestyle factors can all influence the quality of egg and sperm.

The sperm cycle takes around 74 days to generate healthy, fully mature, good swimmers. This means that the health of the sperm is dependent on the health of the father. Around 2.5 months before planned conception. Ideally, Mum & Dad could be working on their own health at least 4 – 6 months prior to conception in order to maximise both healthy sperm and healthy egg production.

Difficulty Conceiving

Through a thorough case history and use of integrative and functional pathology testing, it is possible to avoid fertility / IVF treatments. If you are looking for a natural solution to understand why it may be taking longer to conceive, then consider a fertility package with us and we will investigate and treat the underlying issues. Some issues associated with difficulty conceiving include;

  • Irregular cycles / lack of ovulation / hormonal imbalances
  • Diagnosed conditions such as PCOS; Endometriosis
  • Lack of libido / Low sperm count
  • Recurrent Miscarriages
  • Age
  • Associated (Other) health issues (considerations such as) – diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, lowered immunity (Immune)
  • Diet & Lifestyle (Lifestyle such as diet; alcohol; smoking; drug; prescription medication)
  • Environmental

Fertility and IVF Support

For some couples, the only solution may be IVF. Naturopathy can support this process by ensuring that the health of the sperm and eggs are optimal. We also access functional testing, including thyroid & hormonal levels, to determine any underlying health issues that may be involved.

Pregnancy Care

Top priority is the health of the mum and your growing bubba! Nutritional needs for you both will change as you progress through every trimester. of the baby change with each trimester so whilst a one size fits all pregnancy supplement might work initially, it is unlikely to meet your individual needs.

Additionally, some of the issues that may arise require expert, non-invasive and gentle treatment. The following common symptoms may be successfully treated with naturopathy:

  • Morning sickness
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Gestational Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Haemorrhoids

Preparing for Labour and post birth

Herbal medicine has been used for decades to assist with toning and strengthening the uterus and cervix before birth. This may result in a more comfortable and smoother labour experience.

Postnatal Care

Postpartum care includes the critical first six weeks after the baby is born. The mother may be going through many emotional and physical changes and challenges as she settles into her new rhythm as she learns to care for her newborn.

Herbal medicines and supplements may assist with the physical healing and emotional balancing of the mother and baby post birth.  Supporting her wounds to heal, building her energy back up are just few of the areas we address. Herbs may also assist with breast milk production and quality ensuring baby’s nutritional needs are fully met, after all, the nutritional requirements of a breastfeeding mother are higher than during pregnancy.

Some of the ways a Naturopath may assist postpartum include:

  • Recovery and healing – uterus returning to normal size; vaginal wounds
  • Breast milk production and quality
  • Reducing baby’s reaction to breast milk / Colic
  • Ensuring adequate growth of baby
  • Fatigue / Boosting Energy
  • Emotional support / Anxiety / Postnatal depression / low mood
  • Prevention / treatment of mastitis
  • Cracked / sore nipples
  • Blood loss
